The Australian Maroons?

Hard to believe, but the representative season is here. Australia play New Zealand on Friday week at Skilled Park and if media chatter is correct, the Kangaroos side is already decided. There could be as many as 13 Queenslanders in the team – and why not! They are the five time Origin champions. Just for some fun, I will give you my Test teams based on what I’ve seen this season.

Last start Aussies

Despite winning all their group games in last years’ Four Nations tournament, the Aussies were beaten 16-12 in the Final by New Zealand back in November.

That side from 1-17 was: Slater, Morris, Tate, Tonga, Tuqiri, Lockyer, Cronk, Scott, Smith, Shillington, Lewis, Thaiday, Gallen, Learoyd-Lahrs, Bird, Gidley, Myles.

We know that Tate, Tuqiri and Lewis won’t be there next week due to injury while a fully fit and firing Johnathan Thurston will stroll back in. Petero Civoniceva dropped himself from that last game due to poor form but that’s not an issue now. The team named will be a strong one, but here’s mine anyway:

My Kangaroos

Based on 2011 form and reputations, my 17 man Australian (including 12 Maroons) side is:

Slater, Morris, Gasnier, Inglis, Tonga, Lockyer, Thurston, Scott, Smith, Civoniceva, Gallen, Thaiday, Harrison. Bench: Gidley, Shillington, Myles, Bird.

I don’t think there are any major controversies in there with most of the team from last year retained. I had Ben Creagh and Ben Hannant just missing out, while Kade Snowden and David Taylor were close.

With Darius Boyd injured, I favour Willie Tonga on the wing over Akuila Uate. The reason is simply experience – Tonga has done no wrong in rep football, he’s playing well and has played wing for Queensland before and never let anyone down. Uate should get his chance for NSW first.

Mark Gasnier just beats out Justin Hodges only because Hodges is still coming back from a long term injury. Hodges is playing well and will be in the Queensland team, but Gasnier is just ahead of him. I’ve got the Titans’ Ash Harrison and Greg Bird just ahead of Creagh while Dallas Johnson and Beau Scott went close.

Morris and Shillington have been down on their 2010 form but have done enough to be retained while Cooper Cronk is desperately unlucky – Gidley’s ability to cover the backline gives him the nod on the bench.

Trent Merrin

The Daily Telegraph reported this morning that Dragons unknown Trent Merrin looks like being named in the team on Sunday. He’s a front rower with only about 30 NRL games to his name. Nothing against Merrin, but they must be kidding! Merrin will go close to NSW Origin selection and that’s justified, but why rush things now? I would have a guy like Hannant ahead of Merrin for the Kangaroos at this stage.

The danger in naming an unknown like Merrin is heaping a stack of unfair pressure on him come Origin time. Remember last year when Paul Gallen played for Australia only to be inexplicitly overlooked by the Blues (due to politics more than anything else)? Gallen handled it like the hardened pro that he is, but can a rookie?

If Merrin plays for Australia and is then not picked for the Blues his confidence will be shot.
In the past we could make these selections because New Zealand was no better than most of our club sides. But not anymore.

Merrin is a good player but let him show the world in State of Origin first, rather than throw him to the Kiwis.

The Kiwis

Speaking of the Champions, let’s have a go at picking their side too. I’m assuming the Super League players won’t be considered, so here we go:

Hohaia, Nightingale, Sa’u, Matai, Kenny-Dowall, Foran, Marshall, Rapira, Luke, Blair, Pritchard, Harrison, Mannering. Bench: Fien, Glenn, Waerea-Hargreaves, Moi Moi

This forward pack was very hard to pick and I couldn’t find room for guys like Ben Matulino, Roy Asotasi and Frank-Paul Nuuasala!

I’ve gone with SKD on the wing only because the side needs him, Sa’u and Matai there somewhere. Despite being a better centre these days, SKD is the preferred winger of that trio. There’s specialists available though in Matt Utai and Matt Duffie, plus Antonio Winterstein too.

New Zealand will be very hard to beat so it should be one heck of a Test Match!

Qld Teams Rd 8 - Broncos prepare for toughest test

They may have won six games in a row, but the Brisbane Broncos will face statistically their most challenging opponent of the season in the Canterbury Bulldogs on Friday.

After losing to fellow top four sitters North Queensland in the opening round, the Broncos have gone on to defeat Canberra, Gold Coast, Penrith, Newcastle, Sydney Roosters and Wests Tigers to sit pretty on top of the table.

However of those sides, only the Tigers sat in the top eight leaving some critics to question just how good this 2011 Brisbane side is.

That question could be answered at Suncorp Stadium when Brisbane host the sixth-placed Bulldogs (five wins, two losses) in what will be an ideal yardstick for both sides.

With medium-term injuries to back row duo Ben Te’o (arm, Round 12) and Matt Gillett (foot, Round 15), coach Anthony Griffin has re-jigged his forward pack.

Sam Thaiday will start in the back row with veteran Dane Carlaw at prop, while impressive youngster Josh McGuire has been included on the bench.

The side named today is the same as the one that eventually took the field in Brisbane’s 31-18 win over the Tigers on Good Friday.

Regular fullback Josh Hoffman continues to battle a leg injury and is no chance of earning his maiden New Zealand cap for the May 7 Test Match with Australia.

Meanwhile the Queensland selectors will name a 22-man squad on Thursday for the 2011 Origin series.

Players not named in the initial squad could still force their way into the team for Origin I on May 25.

Broncos pair Justin Hodges and Jharal Yow Yeh will go close to winning a spot in the backline while Sam Thaiday and captain Darren Lockyer are certainties, barring injury.

At this stage Friday night’s match with the Bulldogs will not be broadcast live with Channel Nine preferring to show the Royal Wedding until 8:30pm, where a delayed telecast from Suncorp Stadium will then begin.

No Campbell, for now

Gold Coast coach John Cartwright has stuck with the same team that suffered a last-gasp loss to the Eels for Saturday evening’s clash with the Roosters at Skilled Park.

However there is speculation Preston Campbell may overcome a knee injury in time for the match.

Campbell has missed three matches and would be a welcome inclusion to a side who was labelled ‘inept’ and ‘arrogant’ by their coach following Sunday’s match – a match the Titans should have won until the Eels snatched victory in the dying seconds.

The veteran Campbell could return at fullback, five-eighth or off the bench if he passes a fitness test later in the week.

Sam Tagataese played Queensland Cup last weekend and has again been omitted from the NRL squad for Saturday’s match with the Roosters.

The two sides last met in last years’ Preliminary Final where the Titans were smashed 32-6 at Suncorp Stadium.

Gold Coast hold a 4-3 winning advantage however the Roosters were successful at Skilled Park last season too.

Saturday’s match will be live on Fox Sports from 5:30pm.

Cowboys Rising

The North Queensland Cowboys will aim to continue their NRL resurgence with a fourth consecutive victory on Saturday night.

After spending the last few seasons languishing at the foot of the table, the Cowboys are comfortably in the top eight and face a potential blockbuster showdown with Manly at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

Both sides have five wins to their credit and the winner will likely secure their place in the top four.

The Cowboys are also chasing four straight home wins after accounting for the Storm, Titans and Raiders in the last six weeks.

Coach Neil Henry has included hooker James Segeyaro on the interchange bench after the rookie dropped back to the Queensland Cup last week.

Segeyaro is the only addition to the side that easily accounted for Cronulla (30-12) in Sydney last weekend.

Cowboys back-rower Glenn Hall will come up against his former club for the first time with the Manly side containing a number of his Premiership winning team-mates.

The match will be available live as part of Fox Sports Super Saturday viewer’s choice broadcast with kick-off at 7:30pm.

Titans making right moves

A few weeks ago I wrote the Gold Coast Titans were an old team not getting better. I mentioned they didn’t really have anyone in their mid-20’s hitting peak form consistently. The squad was full of players heading towards the ‘veteran’ stage – the same group who failed in big match Finals more than once. Well, over the past week the Titans have made moves to rectify this in a clear sign 2011 will be the last chance for this inaugural squad.

Club overhaul

The Titans have made two great signings in my opinion and could make at least one more. The big one of course was Jamal Idris. This guy is a superstar already and will only get better. He gives the Titans a serious attacking weapon out wide which will strike a bit of fear into opponents.

Last night it was reported they made perhaps an even better signing (in my opinion). They’ve picked up Cronulla prop Luke Douglas from next season. You might wonder who the heck that is? Well he’s a guy who would have played for Queensland already if he was eligible. He’s played something close to 130 games IN A ROW which is unheard of in the modern game – especially for a forward.

Douglas is in his mid-20s and only going to get better. He’s got a great attitude and huge heart, as his stats suggest. I think he will be a great signing for the club and someone they can build their forward pack around. He’s got the ability to be the Shane Webcke of that club, especially with Luke Bailey nearing the end of his career.

The other whisper is former Rabbitoh and current Storm centre Beau Champion. He is another guy on the rise and went close to representative selection last year. He’s not in the Idris class but presents another genuine attacking option and is a safe defender as well. If this signing does happen it will be another boost for the club.

Too late for 2011?

I still stand by what I’ve said all year so far – the Gold Coast Titans won’t play Finals in 2011. Assuming most teams stay reasonably fit, the Titans do not have one of the best eight squads in the competition. Scott Prince is still not at his best, the backline is unspectacular and the forwards are decent without being overly threatening.

The Titans did beat Wests Tigers last week but honestly, any team should have. The Tigers were awful in the second half and Gold Coast had so many opportunities – they should have won by at least another try or two.

Gold Coast will have their moments in 2011 and beat a few good sides, but it won’t be enough.

Todd Carney

It’s clear Todd Carney has his problems but fair dinkum – what he did the other night was the act of a dickhead. If I was a Roosters fan, or even a player, I would be wondering why the hell this guy was out on the piss while my team was getting flogged in the rain. Why wasn’t he there supporting them?

A few days later it was reported Carney wanted the weekend off to go home. So why didn’t he do it then?

I don’t care what Carney does from a football perspective – he doesn’t play for my team or my state and when he’s at his best, he’ll only put points on a team I’m cheering.

But it’s clear the guy needs help – it was only two weeks ago a judge threatened to put him in jail for crying out loud! It seems the Roosters and the NRL are at least making steps to get him the help he needs and that is good to see.

It looks like Carney will get ONE MORE chance, another last chance ... but how many more does he need, seriously? Maybe, sometimes, being so talented just isn’t enough to make it in the NRL.
As for Anthony Watts, the less said about that the better as far as I’m concerned. How a guy, out with injury at a NEW CLUB, can misbehave so many times is beyond me. As I write this the outcome of his court case is unknown, however it seems inevitable Watts won’t play NRL this year. And possibly never again.

Broncos' Hunt back in the pack

Utility Ben Hunt is the only change to a Brisbane side eyeing their sixth consecutive victory when they face Wests Tigers in Sydney on Good Friday.

Hunt has missed two weeks with a knee injury but slots straight back into his bench spot in place of Corey Norman for this weekend’s traditional Good Friday match at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The Broncos historic opponents, the Roosters, are locked into an ANZAC Day match on Monday with the Dragons meaning Wests Tigers step in as the Broncos marquee opponent.

Rookie winger Dale Copley, who scored a double in last weekend’s 24-6 win over the Roosters, has been retained with Jack Reed in the centres.

That forced re-shuffle came late last week after it was revealed Queensland-hopeful Ben Te’o had a small break in his arm.

Injuries to fullback Josh Hoffman (corked shin) and prop Scott Anderson (calf) will sideline them for at least another week while Josh McGuire and Shane Tronc will again play Queensland Cup.

The Broncos met the Tigers just once last season – losing 14-16 at Suncorp Stadium in a match where Origin stars Darren Lockyer and Sam Thaiday were unavailable.

That win broke a three game losing streak for the Tigers against the Broncos and despite a heavy injury toll, they will look to bounce back from an upset loss to the Titans last week.

The battle between Australian and New Zealand five-eighths, Lockyer and Benji Marshall, could possibly affect the outcome of the game.

Channel Nine will broadcast the Good Friday match live into Queensland and New South Wales from 7:30pm.

NQ shoot for three

Having recorded their first back-to-back win since June 2009, the North Queensland Cowboys are now eying off a hat-trick when they travel to Cronulla on Saturday.

Suspended duo Gavin Cooper (judiciary) and James Tamou (club) both return to a 19 man squad after missing last weekend’s 26-18 win over Canberra.

The duo has been named on a six man bench that also includes their last match replacements Leeson Ah Mau and Will Tupou.

Cooper had been in strong form to start the season and appears likely to play – registering his 100th NRL match in the process.

The Sharks have found renewed attacking but after back-to-back early season wins, they have lost their last three games in close circumstances.

Cronulla’s last home match was an after-the-siren loss to Manly which should inspire them to a big performance in front of their home crowd.

North Queensland has a poor record against the Sharks – winning just seven of 26 matches.

In their last meeting, at Dairy Farmers Stadium in Round 16 last year, the Cowboys gave up an 18-nil lead to be run down 19-20 in Golden Point.

Saturday’s match is live on Fox Sports with kick-off scheduled for 5:30pm.

Bailey’s 200th

Titan’s veteran Luke Bailey will play his 200th NRL match on Sunday when his side travels to Sydney for a match with Parramatta.

Bailey debuted in 2000 for the Dragons and after seven successful years, formed part of the inaugural Gold Coast side for the 2007 season.

He was also the club’s co-captain until this season and has played 15 Origins and four Test matches over a stellar career.

Given the Titans start to the season, the club will be just as focussed on a win this weekend as they are on celebrating Bailey’s career.

The Titans overcame a 14 point deficit to record a late 20-14 win over the Tigers last weekend at Skilled Park – just their second win from six matches to start the year.

Parramatta have an identical record but are coming off back-to-back losses at the hands of Melbourne and the Bulldogs.

Titans Coach John Cartwright has stuck with the same squad for Easter Sunday’s match with Sam Tagataese named 18th man after missing selection last week.

His replacement Luke O’Dwyer was impressive in his first game of the season and will be out for another big match against his former club.

Gold Coast enjoys playing the Eels having won four of their five matches.

Sunday’s match begins at 3pm and will be broadcast by Channel Nine on delay from 4pm.

Brisbane Broncos vs. Tigers, Friday 7:35pm, (Channel Nine, live)
Gerard Beale, Dale Copley, Jack Reed, Justin Hodges, Jharal Yow Yeh, Darren Lockyer (c), Peter Wallace, Ben Hannant, Andrew McCullough, Sam Thaiday, Alex Glenn, Matt Gillett, Corey Parker. Interchange: Mitchell Dodds, Dane Carlaw, Nick Kenny, Ben Hunt.

North Queensland Cowboys vs. Newcastle, Saturday 7:30pm, (Fox Sports, live)
Matthew Bowen, Ashley Graham, Antonio Winterstein, Willie Tonga, Kalifa Faifai Loa, Ray Thompson, Johnathan Thurston (c), Matt Scott (c), Aaron Payne, Ashton Sims, Scott Bolton, Glenn Hall, Dallas Johnson. Cowboys and Money, Money, Money

In a week where the dollar spoke as loud as ever in the NRL, I want to shift gears slightly and talk about something I’m sure all fans can enjoy – the resurgence of the North Queensland Cowboys. This club has been shit for a few years – no other way to describe it, they stunk from top to bottom. But now, in 2011, they’re BACK!!

World of Change

The Cowboys had a bit of a clean out over the off-season and they needed it. The club had been coming across as unprofessional, the footy team looked like they didn’t care and the coach had no control. The place was a mess.

But then they made some big decisions – some great decisions. Bringing in hardened professionals like Brent Tate, Dallas Johnson and Glenn Hall was an outstanding move. These guys have played in the NRL for a long time; they’ve won Grand Finals and know what it takes to be in a winning team. Those guys also would not tolerate the crap that was going on there.

You add in solid, experienced footballers like Gavin Cooper plus youthful exuberance in Tariq Sims and Faifai Loa combined with some quality remaining at the club – WINNING!

JT better than ever

Sharing the captaincy with Matt Scott for the 2011 season is the best thing to have happened to Johnathan Thurston. Last year I said they should have made Scott permanent captain and I stand by that – but this is the next best thing.

Thurston is the Cowboys best player in their history; absolutely no doubt about it and they should never let him go. Last season he was playing injured and didn’t have the team playing how he wanted. It all showed too.

Now he is playing with more freedom because the team is actually putting in and playing well. It’s allowed JT to return to the peak of his game which is perfect with the representative season approaching very quickly!

Also, Thurston has now got his old partner in crime back fully fit and playing near his best.

Matty B is BACK

Matt Bowen, that little fella in the number one jersey. When he’s in form he’s just about my favourite player to watch – which is why I’m chuffed he is back after two or three injury-plagued years.

Bowen is back near Origin form at the moment. His returns are dangerous, he’s linking with Thurston in attack and his defence at fullback is outstanding. Bowen is the X-Factor in this side and when he plays well, so do the Cowboys.

I think it’s so great when anyone comes back from a serious injury let alone one of the smallest guys in the competition coming back from TWO very serious knee injuries.

We need a winning Cowboys in Townsville and this year that’s what we’re getting – if they stay fit the Cowboys have no excuses this season.

Bennett and Jamal

I have to give a quick word on this week’s million dollar men. As a Broncos fan I was torn on Wayne Bennett coming back or not. You’d be mad to knock him back but for Brisbane, it may have been a step backwards. Bennett will always be our super coach and the man who built the club’s legacy.

Bennett will be a success at Newcastle and a huge shot in the arm for the game there. I think it’s great for them and wish them luck – it should be a hell of a ride.

I also think the Titans have pulled off the biggest signing in their history to lure Jamal Idris there next year. Idris is the biggest rising star in the game – not just on the field but this guy will be massive off it (in a positive way).

The Titans have a superstar they can build a profile around because Idris is more than a footballer. He is a rare character in a game without characters. He’s also a young guy on the rise; something the Titans don’t really have.

Both Idris and Bennett deserve the money they’ve got this week and will repay it to their new clubs in droves. While it’s very disappointing for the clubs who missed out (especially the Bulldogs), unfortunately that’s the modern game.

But those clubs will roll on and the game will only get better with these signings.

Qld Teams rd 6 - Titans gain two but lose Laffranchi

The Gold Coast Titans have gained two Origin forwards but lost another for Friday’s crucial match with Wests Tigers at Skilled Park.

After missing last week’s 12-22 away loss to the Cowboys, Greg Bird returns from suspension in his preferred back row position.

Queensland lock forward Ashley Harrison is also back after missing two matches with a hamstring strain.

However those gains come at the expense of Anthony Laffranchi who could miss up to two months with an ankle injury sustained in Townsville.

Riley Brown drops back to the Queensland Cup in the only other change to the 18 man squad from last week while Ben Ridge drops to a five man bench.

Luke Capewell and William Zillman will play fullback and five-eighth respectively, as they did against the Cowboys, while interchange prop Michael Henderson plays his 100th NRL match.

The Titans, with just one win from five games, face an almost must-win match against a Tigers side many rate a major Premiership contender.

Gold Coast currently sits last on the competition table with 2011 by far their worse season to date in their short five year history.

In some good news, the Titans today announced rising sensation Jamal Idris will join the club from next season on a five year deal.

Friday night’s match will go live into Queensland on Channel Nine from 7:30pm.

Two Cowboys suspended

Forwards Gavin Cooper and James Tamou have been rubbed out of Saturday night’s match with Canberra at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

Cooper was suspended for one match after the NRL Match Review committee charged him with a grade one dangerous throw following the win over the Titans.

Meanwhile Tamou, and fellow squad member Blake Leary, have been stood down by the club for breaking team alcohol rules.

North Queensland have a policy stating alcohol is “not to be consumed during a playing week” so both players will miss one game.

Ashton Sims and Scott Bolton come into the Cowboys starting side to face Canberra for the absent Cooper and Tamou.

The new faces on a five man bench are former Dragon Ricky Thorby alongside brothers Leeson and Isaak Ah Mau.

If Thorby plays on Saturday night it will be his first game for the Cowboys while Isaak Ah Mau has not played an NRL game this season after a handful of matches in 2010.

Leeson Ah Mau played the opening four NRL games before being named 18th man against the Titans.

North Queensland is searching for their first back-to-back wins of the season and will start favourites against a Raiders side facing their fifth consecutive loss.

The match kicks off at 7:30pm Saturday and will be available live on Fox Sports Viewer Choice.

Broncos Unchanged

The Brisbane Broncos make their first trip to Sydney for the season when they face the Roosters in Gosford on Saturday night.

The Broncos have won their last four matches, including a 17-6 win over Newcastle last night, to lead the competition alongside Melbourne and St George-Illawarra.

They have also conceded a miserly 44 points for the season and are yet to give up a second half try.

Coach Anthony Griffin today named an unchanged team for the match with the Roosters.

Ben Te’o has been retained in the centres with Mitchell Dodds, Dane Carlaw, Nick Kenny and Corey Norman forming a new look bench.

Carlaw was charged with a ‘crusher tackle’ following the Knights game but his clean record will ensure he avoids suspension.

Shane Tronc and Josh McGuire will probably play Queensland Cup again as part of Griffin’s self-confessed ‘front row rotation’ policy, while winger Dale Copley is back in the Under 20’s.

Fullback Josh Hoffman is still nursing a corked shin while Scott Anderson (calf) and Ben Hunt (knee) are still likely at least a week away as well.

The Broncos will make a rare visit to Gosford’s Bluetongue Stadium with their early season Roosters match traditionally played on Good Friday at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The game will kick-off at 7:30pm Saturday and, like the Cowboys match, available live through Fox Sports Viewers Choice.

Random Ramblings

We’re a month into the competition and there is plenty to talk about. The football has been great, despite being a tipping nightmare! There’s been a stack of issues happening this week so today I will give my take on a few of those.

Queensland ‘cheats’

Most of you probably heard about the blow up in Sydney regarding the Roosters Martin Kennedy wanting to play for Queensland. This led to the Daily Telegraph, known for its sensationalism, “lifting the lid on the Maroons darkest secret” by “exposing” the multicultural backgrounds of the likes of Adrian Lam, Lote Tuqiri, Karmichael Hunt and Petero Civoniceva.

Wow, what a scoop!

At the end of the day, these guys played football in Queensland. They lived in Queensland. They loved Queensland. That’s what made them legends and you know what, that love is Queensland is simply better and Origin means something more. It’s also why the Maroons have won the last FIVE series ... Five time Champions.

Something Sydney will never get over.

Martin Kennedy

To wrap that up, Kennedy appears qualified to represent either state eventually. I don’t think he’s a walk up start this season but things could change. He says he’s a Queenslander so that’s good enough for me and the Maroons will have him.

I can’t believe the Blues would force him to play for them – but it wouldn’t surprise me. And again, that’s the difference between the states.

Matt Orford

So did this guy solely lose the unlosable for the Raiders last week or what? Now I only saw the last try and extra time of their loss to the Titans on the weekend. However I did listen to it on ABC and tweeted asking if he was really playing THAT badly?? Apparently he was.

Orford has been named for this week and he’s a proven NRL halfback, so probably fair enough. But he’s clearly out of form and with a guy in the U20’s ready to go, this could be his last chance.

Titans Friend-less

The absence of Nathan Friend has been highlighted as a key reason for their poor start to the season. However it emerged today that Friend is at long odds to remain at the club beyond this season. They’ve been down this contract road before and finally sorted something out, but I’m not sure this time.

If the Titans can’t keep him they’ll need to buy a damn good replacement because Friend is in many ways, the heart of that team.

At least he’s likely to stay in the NRL, rumoured to be with the Warriors.

Ivan Henjak/Wayne Bennett

The Henjak story over the weekend wasn’t too controversial I don’t think. The Broncos didn’t leave him stranded because they offered him a job at the club for the future. I don’t think we’ll ever truly know what happened – but that’s the same at any club.

I have mixed feelings on Wayne Bennett coming back to my club the Broncos. The plan four or five years ago was for Wayne to take on Darren Lockyer as his coaching apprentice before stepping away and assuming some sort of directors role. That may well be on the cards again now.

But it might also be a step back for the club – do they really have to go back to Bennett? He is a legend and the club owes its legacy to the man, but the Broncos also have to move forward and the only way to adjust to life after Wayne, is to not bring him back.

At the end of the day Bennett has earned the right to choose his club (and his price). If he chooses mine, I will welcome him back with open arms. But if opts to go elsewhere, I will wish him all the best.

Brisbane Broncos

Did you know after four games of intense NRL football, the Brisbane Broncos are yet to concede a second half try? That is a remarkable statistic in the modern game and one I think deserves a heck of a lot of praise.

It’s also the reason the Broncos are on top of the table. Their attack isn’t great and you can’t defend stoutly for 30 weeks to win the competition – but a month in it’s a hell of a start. One you can build your season on.

Qld Teams Rd 5 - Cowboys gain two for 'derby' game

Injured Cowboys Antonio Winterstein and Scott Bolton have been named on an extended bench for Friday night’s showdown with the Titans in Townsville.

Winterstein, a high profile off-season signing from the Broncos, has not played since breaking his jaw against his old club in the trials.

The winger was a regular in his two seasons at Brisbane and was expected to be one of North Queensland’s first-choice outside backs.

Bolton, a back-rower many expected to push for Queensland selection this year, tore his calf in Round One ironically also against the Broncos.

Both have been added to the 17 man squad who narrowly lost to Parramatta in Sydney last weekend, just days after trouncing the Storm.

North Queensland returns to Dairy Farmers Stadium for what has traditionally been an entertaining match with fellow Queensland-based team Gold Coast.

The Cowboys have a poor record against the Titans having lost four of the last six meetings between the clubs but a Willie Tonga hat-trick helped North Queensland win the corresponding match last year.

Matt Bowen will run on to Dairy Farmers Stadium for the first time as the Cowboys most capped player after breaking Paul Bowman’s 203 game record last weekend.

Friday night’s all-Queensland affair will be broadcast live into the state on Channel Nine from 7:30pm.

Friend, Prince return

After helping the side secure one of the all-time great escapes last weekend against Canberra, five-eighth Greg Bird will miss the Titans trip to Townsville after accepting a one match suspension for striking.

After kicking the match-winning field goal against the Raiders in extra time, Bird received a low level charge by the match review committee which had him missing a game even with the early guilty plea.

However Bird’s absence has been offset by the returns of critical players Nathan Friend and Scott Prince.

Hooker Friend will play his first of the season following shoulder surgery and his absence has been highlighted as a key factor behind the Titans slow start to the year.

The Titans have missed Friend’s guidance, defence and creativity from dummy-half and will hope his return can help kick-start their 2011 season.

His replacement Riley Brown has been named on the bench in place of the injured Preston Campbell (knee).

Captain Prince also returns to the side after a hamstring problem forced him out of the Raiders game.

Prince will be reunited in the halves by Luke Capewell – who played five-eighth for the opening two weeks before dropping back to the Queensland Cup.

Capewell replaces the suspended Bird while utility forward Luke O’Dwyer has been named 18th man for what could be his first game of the season.

Fullback William Zillman and prop Matt White should both register their 50th games for the club when they play the Cowboys on the weekend.

Veteran Carlaw named

Dane Carlaw is in line to return to the NRL after three years with Broncos coach Anthony Griffin including him in an extended squad for Monday night’s game with Newcastle at Suncorp Stadium.

Carlaw, with over 260 NRL and English Super League games, 13 Origins for Queensland and six Test matches to his name, could return to the Broncos for the first time since 2007.

He spent three years with French club Catalans in the Super League before lacing up for Wynnum Seagulls in the Queensland Cup to start this season.

He is one of four new faces in the 20-man squad with forwards Mitchell Dodds and Nick Kenny included alongside the exciting Corey Norman on a seven man bench.

Dodds and Kenny have both been in the Queensland Cup after injuries restricted their pre-seasons while Norman has been impressing at five-eighth in the Under 20’s competition.

Injured fullback Josh Hoffman was again not considered after suffering a corked shin against the Titans two weeks ago.

Replacement hooker Ben Hunt twisted his knee in Friday’s 18-10 win over Penrith and is expected to miss no more than two games.

The Panthers win was the Broncos third in a row and they top the table heading into Round 5.

Brisbane also has the best defence in the competition and after four matches, are yet to concede a second half try.

However they face a Newcastle side on Monday who they have not beaten since 2008.

The Knights have won the last three matches between the clubs including a 44-12 thumping at Suncorp Stadium late last season.

Brisbane’s rare Monday night game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports from 7pm.
